Eiichi Miyazato

Miyazato Sensei

Miyazato Eiichi Sensei (1921-2001) was head of the Okinawa Goju Ryu Karate Do after Miyagi Chojun Sensei had passed away. Miyazato took over the teaching duties at the outside garden dojo at Miyagi Sensei's house. In 1957, he opened his own dojo called the Jundokan. It is a 3-story building that includes his home on the top floor and a dojo on the bottom floor. It is situated in the Asato District of Naha (almost 50 meters to the right at the upper end of Kokusai Dori - on the road to Shuri). It is a full-time dojo with senior Karate-Ka always present on the floor. The training is not militaristic and the seniors on hand are always available to offer constructive advice or correction.

Jundokan means "Place For The Study of The Founder's Way", and is dedicated to the continued teaching of Miyagi Sensei's Goju Ryu Karate Do. At the Jundokan, Miyazato Sensei was very active in daily teaching and was graded 10th degree Hanshi. He was a very gentle man who did not talk much. His actions were sufficient in transferring his knowledge to his students. He was a fine example of Goju. Like many other Okinawan Sensei, he did not demand respect from you, but commanded it naturally. He was truly a worthy torch-bearer to his teacher, Miyagi Chojun Sensei.

Miyazato Sensei was the chairman of the All-Okinawa Karate-Do Federation, The Okinawa Goju Ryu Karate-Do Association, and the World Jundokan Association. Many top Goju Ryu Karate-Ka have come through Miyazato Hanshi and the Jundokan.
